Description
Originally called Kylemore Castle, this magnificent abbey in north county Galway was built between 1863 and 1868 as a private home for the family of Mitchell Henry, a wealthy politician from Manchester, England who served as MP for Galway County from 1871 to 1885. The abbey grounds also contain a neo-Gothic church (constructed between 1877 and 1881), a miniature replica of Norwich Cathedral, made from local green Connemara marble, and a Victorian walled garden. The abbey now serves as a girls secondary boarding school. The abbey and grounds are open to the public
